Today I have decided to take a different approach towards my journal writing. It might seem a bit haphazard, but the idea is to give a bit of information on some archaeological sites found around Europe and Western Asia. A photo will be included of the sites I mentioned which were taken by people here on Deviantart. I will be uploading new features every week or so... I will be starting with Malta and Gozo since the oldest free standing structures are found on the Maltese islands.

First off, Ġgantija - on the island of Gozo, in the centre of the Mediterranean, north of Malta, south of Sicily. This, it seems, is the oldest free standing structure in the world, older than the Egyptian pyramids. It dates back to around 3500BC - ie, it is around 5500 years old!!
It consists of two temples, side by side, enclosed within a boundary wall which opens onto a common forecourt, which is itself raised on a high terrace wall. The most striking feature is the surviving height of the walls, which are just over 7m high in both the façade and the inner left apse

Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra were both built sometime between 3000-2500BC - meaning 4500-5000 years ago. Currently, work is underway to build a protective roof over the temples.
Ħaġar Qim, found on a hilltop 2km southwest of Qrendi consists of a single temple unit... Something markedly different about this temple is that the terminal apse, or niche, is replaced by a second doorway to the outside.

Mnajdra is probably the most beautiful temples to visit due t its location. It is tucked into a hollow of the southern cliffs (500m away from Ħaġar Qim). There is absolutely no modern development in sight, and from the temple itself, one can see the sea and Filfla. Ths site consists of 3 temple units which open onto an oval forecourt spanning 30m across.

Naturally, that is not all the archaeology to be found on the Maltese islands, however, it is a start. Stay tuned for next weeks update :)

Brilliant idea man.

Just to be pedantic - although the south temple in Ggantija is the oldest complete free-standing temple, there is an older site at Ta' Hagrat. Unfortunately all that remains of it are it's foundations, over which the current temple was built.

hehe glad u liked that idea.
True, i had forgoten about Ta hagrats foundations... but then again, I was referring to the oldest free standing structure...
If we really want to be pedantic, however... there is a site which seems to be older than Ggantija... I can't remember the name of it, but as far as I know its either in Turkey or in Tunisia (big difference I know, imma memorja brodu :P)
thanks for the comment Nicholas
